Getting ready for the first retreat of the 2024 Dark Woods Grief Tending & Ritual Facilitation Training ✨💫💛👌🏽💃🏼

🌲 This land I currently call home is the traditional territory of the Tla’amin people, and one of their old village sites is now the richest neighbourhood in this town. The other main village site has the now closed down pulp mill on it. A giant machine, now useless, sitting where the heart of village life once flourished. 💔⁠

I'm an uninvited guest on this land, but I didn't choose that myself. It was chosen by my ancestors, some of whom were fleeing genocide themselves. ⁠
⁠
Most places you go these days, you can't acknowledge the history of the land without acknowledging tremendous grief.😭⁠
⁠
I’m thinking about how I’ve made it my intention the last few years to make an effort to cultivate beauty in my life.🌼⁠
⁠
I lived so many years focused solely on meeting basic needs as a single parent, it always seemed like a luxury I couldn’t afford. In the last 5 years, I’ve started to recognize this as a trauma narrative/pattern/belief.🥵⁠
⁠
🫣Sound familiar? Decolonization starts inside our own bodies, minds & hearts. ⁠
⁠
Beauty, I’ve realized, can actually be very cost-effective to create, and like good company, it gives us more energy, not less. ⁠
⁠
If you’ve ever been to a third world country like Guatemala, there you see that despite incredible poverty and hardship, creating beauty is simply woven (literally, through incredible embroidery & handmade fabric) into their lives.⁠
⁠
It’s just that rather than Netflix, they fill their spare moments with practicing and refining their craft. ⁠
⁠
They make beauty rather than consuming content.♥️🧡💛💚💙💜⁠

🙌We can do this too!🙌⁠
⁠
Typically as Westerners, we appreciate beauty, we consume it - but most of us don’t consider creating our own. After all, art can’t make you a living in our fast-paced society, right?⁠
⁠
Is this something we need to reconsider? After all, when you start to understand how our nervous systems heal, you understand that beauty is a natural antidote to trauma.⁠
⁠
Can we make beauty in the face of grief? Can we make beauty OUT OF our grief? What do you think?🤔 ⁠

Vulnerability takes certain conditions to be expressed - the main one being safety.🫂⁠

I’m thinking about all the things blooming and growing at this time of year. Underneath the soil is a network of support. The roots grow deep and connect to one another and to mycelium networks that allows the plant to thrive.💧🪨🌱⁠
⁠
🥰 I say this often but it bears repeating: we need each other's support to do this work. Just like the plants need the mycelium need the trees...🥰⁠
⁠
The other beautiful thing about vulnerability is that when we come together as a group we grow braver and stronger together. Sharing our stories gives others courage to do the same. And being witnessed in a non-judgemental space with compassion while learning the essential skills to navigate grief and trauma, allows us to feel supported and rooted as we do this work.⁠

Together, we are strong. We must learn how to walk alongside our grief as though it was a beloved companion. People need to grieve in community and when we do this work TOGETHER, it not only heals us, but creates a foundation for deep connection. It strengthens the common folk, because it helps us work together. ⁠
